#bmw #bimmerworld #bmwz1 The BMW E30Z Z1 Roadster is one of BMW's most interesting cars. It's design laid the groudwork for the incoming and successful Z car platform. It featured innovative design and interchangeable plastic side panels. In this video we take a good look and listen to the Z1. The car was presented courtesy of the BMWCCA National Z chapter and BMWCCA New Jersey chapter in collaboration with Circle BMW of Eatontown New Jersey USA. The BMW Technik GmbH designed Z1 is the first of BMW's Z two seat convertibles. BMW's board gave approval for the Z1 project August 1985. The first prototype rolled out in 1986 according to some sources. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 11, 1987 and it would go into production in June of 1988. It was the first roadster (2 seat convertible for the company since the model 507. Click on link above to see the legendary BMW 507 Roadster video. Exactly 8000 Z1 models were hand built from 1989 to 1991, of which 6,443 were sold in Germany. 4,091 were produced during 1990. It's initial cost was 83,000 Deutsche Marks or $49,000 US. The Z1 uses plastic body panels and vertically sliding doors which drop into the door sills. BMW noted that the body could be completely replaced in 40 minutes. Features a roll-hoop integrated into the windscreen surround and continuously zinc welded seams. The Z1 was available in six exterior colours and four interior colours. Red is most common, followed by black and green. The passenger compartment actually sits below the chassis. Underneath a flat undertray. The Z1 is one of the first BMWs to use a multi-link rear suspension. This is a front mid-engine placement M20B25 170 hp 2.5-litre straight-six engine, coupled with a five-speed Getrag 260/5 manual transmission from the E30 325. It can accelarate from 0 to 62 mph in just under eight seconds. The HVAC system and most controls and gauges were lifted straight from the E30. Although the Z1 borrowed from the E30, it was mostly all newly designed. 2,760 pounds, about as much as a MINI Cooper Convertible) and low center of gravity. The fenders, hood, deck lid and bumpers are plastic. Each section made from different chemical compositions custom fit into position on the body. The bumpers are made of urethane for flexibility to abate impact. The doors and side panels are molded from a GE thermoplastic. The engine hood, rear deck lid and the flip up tonneau cover are made of fiberglass. The body panels are painted with a special highly flexible coating that was co-developed for the Z1 project by BMW and AKZO. The Z1 was available in six exterior colours and four interior colours. Red is the most common exterior color. Most (6,177) were red, black, or green with a dark grey interior The rarest Light yellow exterior "fun gelb" only 133 examples made. Only 38 red interior were made. The colours "swimming pool blue" and "oh-so-orange" were reserved for the car's designers, Ulrich Bez and Harm Lagaay. The flat plastic undertray is used for ground effect aerodynamics and the rear bumper - in conjunction with the aerodynamically shaped muffler - forms a diffuser to reduce rear lift. The front end reportedly induces a high-pressure zone just forward of the front wheels to increase front-wheel traction.[10] The Z1 has a drag coefficient of 0.36 Cd with the top up or 0.43 Cd with it down. Light yellow exterior (fun-gelb in German or fun yellow in English; 133 examples made) or red interior (38 examples made) are the rarest Z1 colours.
