This video gives an inside look at how a small cancer surgical resection specimen is processed. To better understand the concepts of this video, start here with this previous video, which discusses surgical resections and their reporting: • Oral Cancer Reporting and Synoptic Summari... This specimen was removed from a patient with a T1 squamous cell carcinoma of the lateral tongue. First, the specimen and the suspected clinical tumor must be measured and described. The specimen is oriented by the surgeon using sutures so we know what direction is which. We label each margin with ink so that we can identify them under the microscope. We then make perpendicular sections from the margin to the tumor so we can measure the distance from the margin to the tumor under the microscope. For this specimen, I then performed serial sections so that we can exam the remainder of the specimen and the margins that weren't previously sampled. For small specimen, like this one, I usually submit all of the tissue. Make sure you subscribe so that you don't miss any future videos!
