Romans 15:3–4 — Looking into the Scriptures for Patience and Comfort For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. • Christ Lived by What Was Written – Jesus did not live to please Himself but fulfilled what was written in Scripture. • Paul quotes Psalm 69:9 to show that the suffering of Christ had already been foretold. • If Christ trusted and lived by the Scriptures, believers must learn to live by them as well. • The Scriptures Were Written for Our Learning – What was written long ago was preserved so that we might learn. • The Bible teaches us how God works in the lives of His people and reveals His faithfulness. • The Scriptures Produce Patience – By seeing how God sustained His people through trials, we learn to endure. • The Scriptures Produce Comfort – God’s promises strengthen and encourage the heart. • Patience and comfort together produce hope—the confident expectation that God will be faithful again. In Romans 15:3–4, the apostle Paul reminds believers that Christ Himself lived according to the Scriptures. Jesus did not seek to please Himself but fulfilled what had already been written about Him. Paul quotes Psalm 69:9 to show that even the reproaches directed toward God were placed upon Christ. Paul then explains why the Scriptures exist. Everything that was written in earlier times was preserved so that believers might learn from it. The stories, promises, and examples recorded in the Bible reveal how God works in the lives of His people. As we read and reflect on the Scriptures, they produce patience and comfort within us. Seeing how God faithfully sustained His people throughout history teaches us to endure our own trials. The promises of God strengthen our hearts and remind us that He has never abandoned His people. When patience and comfort grow in the believer’s life, they lead to hope. This hope is the confident expectation that the same faithful God who worked in the past will continue to work in our lives today. Poem — Look Into the Word When burdens rise and strength feels small, Open the Book that has outlived them all. For written there through every age Is heaven’s comfort on every page. The saints endured, the faithful stood, Held by the hand of a faithful God. And when their stories reach your heart, Patience and hope begin to start. Cliché When the heart grows weary, open the Scriptures — patience and comfort are waiting inside.
