A tragic incident in Maharashtra’s Satara district has come to light, where a 29-year-old female doctor working at a government hospital died by suicide, allegedly after facing repeated rape and harassment by two men — a police sub-inspector and her landlord’s son. The doctor was found hanging in a hotel room on the night of October 23. As per reports, a note written on her palm in Marathi claimed that she had been raped four times by sub-inspector Gopal Badane of Phaltan City police station. The officer, now suspended, was reportedly also a relative of the victim and belonged to Beed district. The note further accused one Prashant Bankar, the landlord’s son, of mentally and physically harassing her for the past several months. Both accused have been booked, and her body has been sent for post-mortem. Satara superintendent of police Tushar Doshi confirmed that an FIR was registered based on the family’s complaint, charging the accused with rape and abetment to suicide. A search is underway to trace the absconding accused. Pressure to Falsify Medical Reports A cousin of the deceased doctor claimed that she was being coerced by police and political figures to issue false “medically fit” certificates for arrested individuals and to manipulate post-mortem reports. She had allegedly refused to comply. The family member also said she had previously lodged a complaint against three police personnel in June–July this year, including the officer she accused of sexual assault. However, a Satara police official denied these claims, saying she did file a complaint earlier but it was about a different matter. A senior police officer told PTI that before her death, the doctor had contacted Bankar, and the two had exchanged text messages. Bankar has since been arrested. Political Outrage The case has sparked political controversy in Maharashtra. The opposition Congress criticised the ruling Mahayuti government, accusing it of failing to protect women. “The government led by Fadnavis has failed women,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant. Sushma Andhare of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case thoroughly.
