Exploring the Pheraklos Castle Medieval Ruins in the summer of 2021 on Rhodes. The Pheraklos medieval fortress or Feraklos castle ruins in Charaki on a huge hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on Rhodes in Greece. This was built in the 15th century by the Byzantine Empire “The fortress was originally built in the Byzantine era. It was captured by the Knights Hospitaller on 20 September 1306, being their first possession on the island that would become their base…The fort was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1523 after a long siege, a few months after the capture of Rhodes. The Ottomans did not use the castle and it has since been abandoned.” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feraklo... A year after the Knights Hospitallers, who were part of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, took the castle, the first victory on the island, this decree was issued by the pope on 5 September 1307, “The Pope issued an act confirming the Hospitallers’ possession of the island of Rhodes.” Source: https://www.worldstatesmen.org/Malta_... From there, the island of Rhodes played a very important role as headquarters for the SMOM and the defending of the routs to the holy land, as we read, “In 1310, led by Grand Master Fra' Foulques de Villaret, the knights regrouped on the island of Rhodes. From there, the defence of the Christian world required the organization of a naval force; so the Order built a powerful fleet and sailed the eastern Mediterranean, fighting battles for the sake of Christendom, including Crusades in Syria and Egypt.” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soverei... Worth a visit and the steep hike up the hill in the heat to see these ancient ruins. You can freely walk around the site and it is free to go in there. There is also a series of tunnels at the base of the hill UNDER the castle ruins! They mined out the stone or limestone to use on the castle structures, buildings and walls above. There are certainly some dangerous areas, so be careful. That arch ruins falling down on a person would not be nice! “Castle built near the village of Malona on a hill 85 metres high overlooking the sea between the bays of Ayia Agathe and Charaki. It is also known as Faraklo or Charaki...It was repaired under grandmasters Orsini (1467-1476) and Pierre d?Aubusson (1476-1503), for the protection of the fertile territory around and the nearby anchorages. In its line of sight was included the castle of Lindos; the two castles were the only ones omitted in an order to abandon the fortresses of the countryside in1470.” Source: http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/2/eh251.... #adventure #rhodes #castle The views of the surrounding beaches and the sea are also amazing. The climb up the hill you use an ancient stairwell that looks like it was attacked or defended with hot tar. You can see how it melted all over the rocks. That can be slippery too, be careful. What is great, after a dusty and tiring walk around these ancient ruins of the Feraklos castle, you can take a swim at the beach and enjoy a fresh lemonade!
