Benwood Volunteers were preparing to go to a Fire Truck parade in Shadyside, OH on the afternoon of Sept 4, 2021 at 1700 hrs. At approx 1710, Chief Taylor pulled up the station and indicated something was on fire possibly, at the south end of Benwood, WV in Marshall County. Upon a closer look, the volunteers assembled at the station staffed the engine, the aerial truck, and the command vehicle and starting quick response to investigate further. Andrew Cunningham (IG: @saltyfirephotographer) joined Truck 7 with 3 volunteers. En route, Chief Taylor arrived on the scene with a request to "Strike the box" for the working scrapyard fire on the Strauss Plant property in South Benwood/McMechen area, not far from the Ohio River (to the west). Chief Taylor asked dispatch to assign Benwood Volunteer Fire and McMechen Volunteer Fire to the box. Truck 7 arrived on the scene and OIC, A/C for the BFD had heavy fire showing from a scrapyard. 3rd man took the plug and hand drug the line to the Truck (quint). Ladder 7 stretched a preconnect and once charged started the attack on the massive fire. McMechen arrived just behind Benwood and established a hydrant with LDH. Benwood E17 pulled closer and stretched backup lines. Other box alarm companies included Moundsville VFD (tanker engine), Mt. Olivet (pumper engine company), Bethlehem E-97 (pumper engine company), Mozart Rescue/Tanker Engine company and command, Sherrard VFD engine company and Wheeling Fire Department was special called for Boat 5 in the Ohio River with WFD Duty Chief C-4 in command. PD had the security detail. Companies time on scene was approximately 6 hours before Benwood took up and return to its firehouse.
