Sometimes the best “black” background… isn’t black at all! In this beginner friendly studio lighting tutorial, Gavin Hoey shows why pure black backdrops can make your portraits look flat and how adding just a hint of light can bring your images to life. Working in his small home studio with model Charlotte, Gavin starts with a one light setup and a basic black fabric background. The result is a classic low-key portrait that sees the model merge with the background on the shadow side. To fix it, Gavin adds a subtle dash of background flash. His first option is to place the light directly behind the model to lift the background from black to very dark grey. Then Gavin switches to a stripbox to create a gentle gradient tone across the black fabric background. He shows how small changes in flash power can make a huge difference to a background tone and why almost black often looks far more professional than pure black. Finally, Gavin builds on the simple setup to create a characterful low-key portrait full of depth, texture, and mood.
