When we eat food from mouth it goes to the stomach through a pipe called esophagus or food pipe. Then it goes into the stomach. It is partly digested, then it goes to small intestine. From small intestine it goes to large intestine. From there, it comes to rectum and it comes out of anal opening. So it is a single tube from esophagus to anal canal. So when the food has to pass through this tube, it gets digested on its way, especially in the stomach and small intestines food gets digested and ingredients are absorbed. So rest of the things are thrown into the large intestine. There will be more of liquid, a lot of enzymes and juices which are secreted form stomach, from bile and then from the small intestine. Lot of liquid will be there to conserve that in the large intestine, it starts absorbing a lot of water and makes the stool more or less semi solid and then it comes out. That is the mechanism. Intestinal obstruction is when there is some obstruction in the passage.
