TT Circuit Assen Old Layout 1955 - 1983 In this Circuits of the video we show you the 1955 – 1983 layout of TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands. In this periode it was only used for motorcycle races. Short after the start was the famous S-Bocht, a fast right-left combination. However it was easy full throttle it was most spectaculair to see the motorcycles move from the right to the left at high speed. Unfortunately, this spectacular corner has been demolished in 2006 for the modernisation of the track. After the lost S-Bocht we enter the abandoned "Noordlus" (Northern Loop). In 2006 this section was replaced by a miniature version of the Noordlus. From the "Veenslang" section we continue on the current TT Circuit Assen. During the video we explain what has been changed compare to 1955 - 1983 version of the track. About TT Circuit Assen The TT Circuit of Assen was original a street circuit. The first ever Dutch TT was held in 1925 on a street circuit with Start/Finish in the village of Rolde, not too far from Assen. A year later it moved to a new street circuit near the city of Assen. In 1955 a semi permanent circuit opened which used parts of the old street circuit, like Start/Finish. The layout we show you in this video is the first layout of this new semi street circuit, which was specially designed for motorcycle races. Until the 1990’s car racing was taboo at Assen. The old TT Circuit ran on the grounds of both the municipality of Assen and the municipality of Beilen. When the organizers want a reconstruction of the track the mayor of Beilen didn’t want to cooperate, so the new track came on the territory of Assen only. That was the story they told in Assen… In Beilen they told the municipal of Assen wanted all the profits of the Dutch TT for themself, so they abandoned the section through Beilen. Angry residents of Beilen predicted that it would soon be over with the Dutch TT on that micky Mouse circuit… However, the new semi permanent track was built in only 4 months. For that reason they called it “The Miracle of Assen”. When the 7.7 km (4.78 Miles) Mickey Mouse circuit was used for the 1955 Dutch TT, drivers in the 500 CC class drove one slow lap on the track, to see how much audience had came to the event. Then they wanted more Money from the organization. If not, there would be no 500 CC race! So the organizers had to pay. The 1955 TT Circuit of Assen made usage of a public road, which formed the central axis of the track. On both sides was a permanent loop, the Northern Loop and the Southern Loop. When there were no races, the full circuit was open for public. Hower both permanent loops lead nowhere, except to the farmers land on the inside of the track, they also were open for traffic untill 1992. Through the years the layout of the 1955 track changed, but it is still the base of the current TT Circuit of Assen. For safety reasons they shortened the Northern Loop in 1984. The section we are now was cut off by a new section with a new Haarbocht Corner. To bring back the length of what the people of Beilen called a Micky Mouse track to a more common length they abandoned the full Northern Loop in 2006 and replaced it by a new stadium section.
