My yard is living proof that you don’t need flood irrigation—or a massive water bill—to cultivate a lush, productive, and visually stunning edible subtropical landscape in the desert. Located in a typical HOA community in the Phoenix metro area, I chose to break away from the concrete-heavy yards favored by many neighbors and instead created something vibrant and sustainable. With inspiration from fellow gardeners, years of hard work, and a whole lot of love, I began transforming my backyard in 2016 into a thriving tropical food forest. Today, it’s a rich tapestry of flowering, medicinal, and fruit-bearing trees—each contributing to the ecosystem and beauty of the space. From fragrant plumeria and butterfly-attracting flowering shrubs, to healing moringa, to abundant guavas, and sapotes, this desert sanctuary defies expectations. Despite our extreme climate—temperatures ranging from 25°F in winter to 120°F in summer with low humidity—this oasis continues to flourish. While I don’t offer in-person tours, this video gives you a full virtual walkthrough of my entire collection: hundreds of rare and exotic fruit trees and plants now thriving for almost a decade.
