Strengthening Universal Salt Iodization through Public distribution System in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu, an Indian state, despite being a salt producing state and supplying 16 percent of nation’s iodized salt has only 41 percent of the households consuming adequately iodized salt and as high as 35 percent consuming non-iodized salt resulting into more than 2 million of children being unprotected from Iodine Deficiency Disorders. To address this serious nutrition threat, Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation established by Government of Tamil Nadu started manufacturing and distributing affordable adequately iodized crystal salt to the consumers. Watch this short film to see how sensitization and trainings of the functionaries helped in accelerating efficient movement and timely indent of adequately iodized salt in the Public Distribution System. The trainings focused on sensitization on Iodine Deficiency Disorders, Supply chain of salt and Sales motivation of functionaries and stakeholders. The objective of the initiative was to increase sales of iodised salt through FPS using marketing strategy and targeting the salesmen of Fair Price Shops in selected 11 districts. Radical increase in major three indicators that is IDD awareness, knowledge on supply chain and motivation among salesmen led to drastic increase of uptake of adequately iodized salt through PDS from 13 percent to 38 percent among the below poverty line population.
