Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata in D major, K 119 Joyce Chen, harpsichord Recorded on an antique 1768 Joannes Goermans in Delaware, USA (July 2016). A native of Taiwan, Joyce Chen began her musical studies on the piano and the violin at a young age. She moved to the United States initially to pursue an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on acoustics at the University of California, Berkeley. Upon joining the UC Berkeley Baroque Ensemble, Ms. Chen found her true lifetime passion for early music and decided to become a professional musician. At Berkeley, Ms. Chen studied the harpsichord with Charlene Brendler and Davitt Moroney, and the organ with George Emblom through the University Organ Scholarship. Under the tutelage of Arthur Haas, Ms. Chen is currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Harpsichord Performance as well as a Master of Arts in Music History/Theory at Stony Brook University, New York. Her doctoral research paper is titled, “Communicating Affects through Music, Text, and Gesture in Lully’s Atys,” in which she explores the inter-relationships between these three key elements in opera and incorporates primary literature on affect studies, rhetoric, and baroque gesture. Ms. Chen is also an advocate of contemporary music. Her doctoral lecture-recital examines how postmodernism influences Ligeti’s 1978 harpsichord pieces as well as later repertory. Recently, Ms. Chen was the harpsichord soloist in the world-premiere of Maltese composer Joseph Vella’s Concerto for Harp, Harpsichord, Piano and Orchestra, with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra. Joyce Chen is currently based in Wilmington, Delaware. She works as the curator for the Flint Collection of antique keyboard instruments and as the program associate and harpsichordist for Brandywine Baroque, directed by Karen Flint. In March 2016, Ms. Chen was a finalist in the Eighth Jurow International Harpsichord Competition, hosted by the Historical Keyboard Society of North America at Oberlin College. In addition, she is also a recipient of the 2016 Early Music America Scholarship. In addition to maintaining an active performing career, Joyce plans on undertaking an interdisciplinary PhD in Musical Acoustics in the near future.
