Patellar (Knee Cap) Instability Exercises and Rehab | Doctor and Physio led

In this video Dr O'Donovan (medical doctor) and Ella Boys (physiotherapist) guide you through 8 exercises to help with patellar instability (knee-cap instability). In this video, you'll learn simple and effective rehab exercises to help stabilise your kneecap, relieve discomfort, and build strength in the muscles that support your knee. 👉 What is patellar instability? Patellar instability occurs when the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position, often sliding to the side. This can cause pain, swelling, a feeling of giving way, or even dislocation—especially during activities like running, jumping, or twisting. 👉 What is patellar stabilisation surgery? Patellar stabilisation surgery is performed when the kneecap dislocates repeatedly or doesn't stay aligned despite rehabilitation. The procedure aims to restore normal tracking of the kneecap by tightening or repositioning ligaments or adjusting bone alignment. 👉 What are the treatments for patellar instability? Early treatment focuses on rest, bracing, targeted strengthening exercises, and physical therapy to improve alignment and muscle control. Surgery is typically reserved for cases where conservative management hasn’t worked or when instability is severe. In this video, we guide you through step-by-step exercises designed to strengthen the muscles around your knee—especially your quadriceps and hip stabilisers. Whether you're recovering from surgery or trying to avoid it, these exercises can support your journey to better knee health.
