This is a video that was admittedly a very long time coming, which is an extended loop of the original & current area music for its a small world at Disneyland since 1966. This is honestly my absolute favorite piece of area music anywhere. It is a gorgeous 4 minute original composition of various multicultural instrumentals from around it's a small world. Many different regions and countries are represented here, and each verse represents a different one. The original masters played on tape from May 28, 1966, until May 1993. Then they removed this entire soundtrack to install an abbreviated version of the Disneyland Paris soundtrack. I love that soundtrack too, but this original one works much better in California. Especially as that queue music was a lot shorter than this, only 1.5 minutes instead of 4, and didn't have multicultural music like this one. Thankfully, in 2003 they restored and remastered the original soundtrack which can still be enjoyed today. This video features many pictures of the façade between 1966-1993 and since 2003. They show the evolution of the façade. In 1966 it was white, silver, & gold much like today, but a bit more silver on the clock tower. Around Sept 1968, the many smaller gold spinning flowers were redesigned more like today's. Around Dec 1968/Jan 1969, the gears on the clock tower were repainted gold. Nearby, a small souvenir stand would appear in 1969, which would not change until 1991. The flowers on either side of the clock tower were rearranged in 1970. In late 1974, the gears were painted from gold to silver, more like today's than 1966-68. In May 1976, the signage was replaced to allow a better view of the clock tower. At the same time, a temporary stage was built to the left of the facade in a similar art style. This was to accommodate the construction with the Tomorrowland stage in 1976-77 when it was rebuilt to accommodate Space Mountain. This stage disappeared around Fall 1977. In May 1977, the clock tower, loading area, and walls surrounding the flume were repainted in shades of blue. I speculate this might have been to better thematically fit with the Marc Davis never built 1977 concept for Enchanted Snow Palace in Fantasyland, where the theater is now. In 1981, the umbrellas were redesigned. The once isolated small world area began to change with Videopolis built nearby in 1985, though the façade would remain in it's late 70's/80's form for 7 more years. In August 1989, a special plaque was erected on one of the signs commemorating the 25th anniversary of the historic original version at the 1964-65 World's Fair. In Spring 1990, Bank of America ended sponsorship after 24 years, and the signage was altered to reflect that. In early 1992, Mattel became the new sponsor. In Fall 1992, the White, Blue, & gold was replaced with pastels, and the old queue was rerouted for the new Mattel Toy Shop. The topiaries were changed in 1996. Thankfully, in Summer 2002 the White & gold from 1966 made a triumphant return for Disneyland's 50th anniversary in 2005. The wall surrounding the flume received its current paint job in early 2004, and the umbrellas were changed to the current design in early 2005. The Toy Shop was repainted in November 2004, which previously still had 1992 pastels. The nighttime lighting was updated in Feb 2009. After several previous variations, the current signage appeared in early 2017. In early 2018, the queue was again rerouted to better distribute crowds. In my opinion, this façade is the most beautiful building in all of Disneyland. Mary Blair and Rolly Crump did a fantastic job. This video is also in tribute to Richard Sherman, who passed away yesterday. Along with his brother Robert they wrote a number, of the most classic and well known Disney songs such as it's a small world, There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Room, Miracles from Molecules, One Little Spark, the soundtracks for Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, The Jungle Book, and much more. He will be sorely missed. I hope you enjoy this classic area music. I do not own any of the audio or images used in this video. All of this audio is owned by Disney, not me.
