An Easy Way to Make That Plastic Fuel Tank Flow!

Two problems I have with fuel are 1) keeping the tank clean and 2) getting the tank to flow. We're going to solve both problems today. I like to keep my fuel tanks clean because I haul them in the back seat of my truck when going to the gas station so they won't blow out the back. Sometimes the diesel and gas scum on them gets really nasty, but I've found a great product from my sponsor, WD-40, that cleans the tank right up. It's called WD-40 Specialist Machine and Engine Degreaser Foaming Spray. Shoot it on, wait a couple of minutes for it to eat off the layers of grease and fuel residue and then wide it off. The other problem with 5 gallon plastic tanks is getting them to flow. There's no vent! A solution is to add a gutted tire valve in the top. It takes less than ten minutes and costs under $10. It really helps fuel tanks empty a bunch faster. The product shown in the video is a Haltec TV-575-HP tire valve. Once you have this product, remove the core and you're ready to install it. You'll need a long wire, a drill with 1/2" bit, and a small crescent wrench. Get a wire that fits easily into the tire valve, but is strong enough that when kinked, will hold the stem in position. It needs to a little longer than twice the length of the tank. Drill a 1/2" hole in the tank opposite the fill opening. There should be a flat spot there. Then feed the wire through the new hole, back out the fill opening. Feed the tire valve with the threads going toward the tank about halfway on the wire. Kink the wire so when you pull it back out the new hole it will hold the tire valve in place. Pull the wire back out the new hole, put on the grommet, the washer, and the nut. Tighten the nut up and pull the wire back out the fill opening and you're done. Put the cap back on and you're ready. Anytime you're emptying fuel, take that little cap off, and the fuel will flow evenly and rapidly. You don't have to wait 15 minutes and constantly tilt the tank forward and back to get the fuel in. I have two diesel tanks and two gas tanks and I've cleaned them with WD-40 Machine Degreaser and added the valve stems to all of them. It probably took about an hour to do all of that on a rainy day and it makes me smile every time I'm getting fuel or putting it in. The valves I'll be reaping the benefits from for years to come.
