The akad nikah (wedding solemnization) of Kakak Amira & Teddy officiated by our young Imam Khizer Ali at the New Haven Islamic Center (NHICCT) masjid in Orange, Connecticut on Friday June 17, 2022. This video is primarily for our family members and friends and to preserve moments in the life story of our family but it is published openly to a general audience as a courtesy so that those interested may be able to witness the beauty and simplicity of an Islamic or Muslim marriage ceremony. Therefore please refrain from making inappropriate remarks as your comments will be immediately removed. Muslim marriage and Islamic wedding customs are traditions and practices that relate to wedding ceremonies and marriage practices prevailing within the Muslim world. Although Islamic marriage customs and relations (also permissible rituals to a certain extent) vary depending on country of origin, madhhab or mazhab (jurisprudence school of thoughts) and government regulations, both Muslim men and women from around the world are guided by Islamic laws and practices specified in the Quran. According to the teachings of the Quran, a married Muslim couple is equated with clothing. Within this context, both husband and wife are each other's protector and comforter, just as real garments “show and conceal” the body of human beings. Thus, they are meant “for one another”. The Quran continues to discuss the matter of marriage and states, "And among His Signs is this, that he created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your [hearts]…". Marriages within the Muslim community are incredibly important. The purpose of marriage in Islamic culture is to preserve the religion through the creation of a family. The family is meant to be “productive and constructive, helping and encouraging one another to be good and righteous, and competing with one another in good works”. A few quick notes: The young Imam, Mr. Khizer Ali (Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia) is actually Asfa's classmate at Molloy Elementary School some 15 years ago. Asfa, of course is Kakak Amira's younger brother. Kakak's Amira's younger brother Amirul was also married at the same mosque 5 years ago but with a different Imam (Professor Dr. Sheikh Mohamed Abdelati who is now an Imam at the Bridgeport Islamic Center of Connecticut (BICC) masjid. On the other hand, Amira & Teddy's solemnization is influenced by Mazhab Hanafi. All the four schools of fiqh - Shafi'i/shafie, Hanbali, Maliki, Hanafi - concur that marriage is performed by the recital of a marriage contract which contains an offer made by the bride or her deputy (na'ib), such as her guardian or agent (wakil), and a corresponding acceptance by the groom or his deputy. A mere agreement without the recital of the contract does not amount to marriage. The schools also agree that a marriage contract is valid when recited by the bride or her deputy by employing the words, ankahtu or zawwajtu (both meaning. I gave in marriage) and accepted by the groom or his deputy with the words, 'qabiltu' (I have accepted) or 'raditu' (I have agreed). Anyways, back to the akad nikah. In attendance: A few of Kakak Amira's old classmate and acquaintances from Stanford University flew 3,000 miles from California to attend this private event. Teddy's parents drove all the way from Chicago. His sisters, brother in law and family drove and flew from Washington DC and New York City. Kakak Amira's siblings, the Anuar's family - Amirul, Asfa, Fikri, Hizami, Anisa & Aiman - a few flew back from California, Georgia & drove home from Boston. Last but not least the Malaysian Community in West Haven. Also the infamous Cecep Tomasati, a rising Indonesian YouTuber/vlogger, who is also the assistant to the Imam. For Malay speaking Malaysian / Indonesian / Singaporean viewers, we will provide additional commentary in the comment section.
