What started out as an ambitious thought to attempt the ever deceiving Stirling Ridge walk, soon manifested itself as just that. Too ambitious, too foolish. We did have a fantastic time though, but lack of preparation got us in the end. It wasn't smart leaving Perth at 7:00 PM and then sleeping in the Bluff Knoll car park, illegally I might add. We got to sleep at 2:00 AM and was up by 5:00 AM so the ranger didn't knick us for staying the night. We took 5L of water with us each, but didn't take a form of water filter/purifier in the event of finding a stream or the water barrel further along the ridge. We drank 4L in the first day and I succumbed to a brief spell of heat stroke thanks to the 30 degree heat and lack of shade. Throwing up on the mountain side wasn't a highlight of the trip. The hike up to Ellen's Peak is quite steep with scrambling on all fours required at times, so I will take less items next time to reduce weight. Storms hit around 3:30 PM and we witnessed lightning start a bush fire on a field not far from Gnowangerup to the north ~40km away. Remarkably a storm cloud front came across and put the fire out much to our amazement. We were weathered in as it rained for much of the remaining sunlight, so we camped at a nice flat and sheltered spot a little below Ellen's Peak. This spot isn't on any of the maps we saw, so we were quite lucky we ran into it and at the right time. With only 1L left, we decided to get up at 5:00 AM and take advantage of the cool early morning temperatures to get back to the car. It only took us 4 hours to hike the 11km back to the car, as opposed to the 7-8 hours to get up there. FYI that 5km hike along the fence is way easier on the way there. My feet ached like hell on the way back, although to point fingers, lack of hiking shoes is probably to blame for that one. They should just be able to open the gate and drop people off after that section. The Amelup petrol station was shut on the way back. Thankfully Tony, the owner of Stirling Ridge Retreat, had 10L of fuel to get us to Gnowangerup and on our way back to Perth. Great experience. Will definitely be back during a cooler time and with less weight; way too much camera gear, which hardly got used as I was too busy breathing out my ass. One love.
