We loved it! The cost is 25,000-50,000 rupiah per hour ($2.50-$5 Australian). Transcript: The Cat Café of Ubud was right next to our hotel, which was fantastic. Don’t get it confused with the Lazy Cat Café, which is actually a normal café about two minutes’ walk away. Sadly, there are some fairly steep stairs up into the café—steep and narrow—so it would be difficult for someone in a wheelchair to access. Tim (live): Mum! Look at that one right there. The tail hanging out. Felicity (live): Ooh, I wonder who’s up there! Felicity (voiceover): So there’s high places for the cats to hide; there’s a glassed-in area for you to eat; there’s another glassed-in area where you enter, and you’re expected to take off your shoes. The cats are allowed almost everywhere, including on the tables and in the kitchen. As you can see, there’s a little room where the customers are not allowed but the cats can go. It’s clear some of the cats have exotic breeds mixed in. Like this one has unusually long legs, and a lot of them had slightly unusual faces—similar to Burmese but not Burmese. The majority of the cats were fluffy, and it’s very clear that they are brushed regularly. There was one kitten, an older kitten—this one—and she provided a lot of entertainment for us. The only sign of wear and tear is on the cat tower. I suspect they replace those ropes every so often, but cats (like dogs) really enjoy destroying things. A cat tower that’s partly destroyed is much more fun for a cat than one that looks pristine. Everything else, however, did look pristine. It was very easy to get beautiful photos of the cats as there is lots of gentle, natural light. There was also an air conditioner. This cat sat on our stuff, and was emphatically comfortable the whole time. The cats were also extremely comfortable with each other, often grooming each other. The kitten often tried to play with them, and not many of them played back. But given there are fourteen cats altogether, [s]he has thirteen victims to choose from. Plus of course, human customers coming to play with him[her]. It’s possible this cat is his mum. Her mum. There are several medium-haired calico or tortoiseshell cats, so there’s a strong family resemblance between many of them. The cats are so chill they’ll actually walk up to you for pats. They don’t flinch when you pat them; you don’t even need to let them sniff you first. They are so incredibly relaxed with both humans and with each other. The politics of cats can be immensely complicated, but these guys seem to have it all worked out. It was a very peaceful place. I picked up a couple of the cats, and they just politely let me know they didn’t like it.
