What is the LASIK cornea flap? 👁️ And can it open up? During the first step of LASIK surgery, a laser is used to very precisely cut a flap in the cornea. The flap remains connected to the cornea with a small amount of tissue, similar to a hinge, and is folded back during the second step of the procedure. Under the flap, on the bed of the cornea, the second laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct your vision, and then the flap is put back down and smoothed into place. Only a small incision remains and generally heals up within a few hours. By the next day, most patients are seeing 20/20 or better. While LASIK is considered one of the safest and most researched elective surgeries available, and many branches of the US armed forces offer it to enhance service members' vision, there are risks, just like with any surgical procedure. While the edges of the flap generally heal very fast and most people never feel it or worry about it again, there is a small chance that a high-impact injury to the eye could dislodge it in the future. So, if you regularly engage in extreme contact sports like boxing or basketball, there may be other vision correction surgeries more suited to your lifestyle.
