Fugue XIII in G flat/F sharp major for 4 voices - Wieland Handke 24 preludes/fugues - work in progr.

DONA NOBIS PACEM - FUGUE IN THE STYLE OF PALESTRINA - Slow, with large note values and in 4/2 time (large allabreve) as well as a subject that - beginning with a leap of a fifth - fills it out with second steps, this fugue is closest to Palestrina's style. If one imagines it as a choral fugue, the theme could serve as a setting of “Dona nobis pacem”; the motif in the interlude after the fourth section could bear the text “Herr, gib uns deinen Frieden”. This possible interpretation suggests itself, as the composition was begun in February 2022 - shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As a kind of dedication, the Ukrainian national anthem is therefore integrated as a further theme in the second part of the fugue in the upper voice. Composed: February-May 2022, 90 bars.
