On the evening of July 7, 2023, around 8:13 PM, the City of Miami Police Department received multiple 911 calls describing a white male wearing a bulletproof vest, standing next to a blue SUV outside an apartment complex at 10th Avenue.The caller reported the man actively firing an assault rifle into the air, causing nearby civilians to flee the area. Officers Daniel Cantero and Diego Solano were in the vicinity, at the Pinecrest Bakery near 10th Avenue ,when a civilian approached them to report the ongoing shooting. Immediately, both officers equipped themselves with bulletproof vests, grabbed their rifles, and responded to the scene. Officer Cantero arrived first and spotted the suspect, later identified as Christian Labaut, wearing a bulletproof vest and holding a rifle. Labaut turned and fled into the gated apartment complex. Officer Cantero pursued him on foot, issuing multiple commands to stop and show his hands but Labaut ignored. Labaut continued running, making his way through a gate and into a hallway inside the building. He entered the first door on the right, which appeared to be an apartment. At this point, Officer Cantero discharged his rifle, striking Labaut several times. It was later discovered though unknown to Officer Cantero at the time that Labaut lived in this apartment with his parents. When officers approached, they found an assault rifle beneath Labaut’s body. Labaut was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center, where he eventually recovered from his injuries and was later discharged.
