Michael Radford Murrintown was a IRA volunteer and became Commandant of the third brigade in Wexford. He was arrested the morning his brother was shot by freestate forces in a ambush on 10th January 1923. Mick along with 27 other prisoners escaped from Wexford gaol on 2nd May 1923. The Civil War ended 24th of May 1923 and Mick returned and worked the family farm in Murrintown. The family were tipped off that the freestate forces were aware of his presence and planned to arrest him. He went on the run. Unarmed and traveling from Tommhaggard to Tacumshane on the 22nd June 1923 Mick and fellow Volunteer Con McCarthy came accross a Freestate patrol at the cotts Ballybough Tacumshane. they were challenged to halt and fearing arrest and freestate reprisals ran and jumped a ditch. A young freestate soldier fired at them and shot Mick in the back. He lay in the field just beyond the ditch and his comrade escaped to raise the alarm. Mick was left in this position and no medical aid was allowed. A doctor at the inquest stated that he could have survived if medical aid was given. Instead he was left there and allowed to die. His death will never be forgotten by family and the communities of Murrintown and Tacumshane. He is remembered every year by the Republican community in Wexford.
