Ten years after the 2016 UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs, the International Drug Policy Consortium’s new report finds that global drug policies continue to cause widespread and preventable harm. Criminalisation, mass incarceration, and violence linked to anti-drug campaigns disproportionately affect marginalised communities, while funding for harm reduction remains insufficient and access to essential medicines is deeply unequal. Indigenous Peoples and farming communities also face ongoing violence and forced eradication. The report calls for urgent reform of the global drug control system, prioritising human rights, public health, accountability, and the meaningful participation of affected communities in shaping future drug policy.
