The Failure: The People's Republic of China, under Mao Zedong, implemented agricultural policies between 1958 and 1962 based on the pseudoscientific ideas of Soviet agronomist Trofim Lysenko. The Scientific Breakdown: Lysenkoism rejected established Mendelian genetics in favor of discredited Lamarckian theories of inheritance. Chinese officials, adhering to this ideology, mandated disastrous agricultural practices, such as close planting of crops (based on the idea that plants of the same class would not compete), and deep plowing (based on the belief it would yield better roots). These practices were scientifically baseless and ecologically destructive. The Consequence: The policies led to a total collapse of the agricultural system, directly causing the Great Chinese Famine. It is estimated that 15 to 55 million people died of starvation, making it the largest famine in human history and a terrifying example of ideology completely overriding scientific evidence.
