Age-verification laws have been in the making for years. The UK’s “Online Safety Act”, while only recently being actually implemented on websites, was actually passed in 2023. Australia has had a law on the books for two years that will prohibit anyone under the age of 16 from creating or having social media accounts, and the U.S.'s “Kids Online Safety Act” passed in the senate last year, but hasn’t progressed further than that. Adult websites in certain U.S.have been forced to add age-verification steps to their sites since early 2023. Now, entire companies like YouTube are passing policies that effectively suppress content and user’s freedom of speech… unless they want to hand over personal information to verify their age. In this video, I’ll discuss why these laws and policies are dangerous to not only our privacy, but also our free access to information. Let me know what you think!
