The bomb, which also wounded more than 140 others, went off outside the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf on Friday as Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim emerged after delivering a sermon calling for Iraqi unity. A senior police official said that Iraqi police had arrested four men - two Iraqis and two Saudis - in connection with the bombing and that they all had connections to the al-Qaida terror network. VOICE-OVER: 0003 Thousands of people gathered outside Iraq's holiest Shiite mosque in Najaf to mourn the victims of Friday's car bombing. 0010 The bomb ripped through a crowd of worshippers, killing at least 85 people, including a leading Shiite cleric who had just delivered a sermon calling for Iraqi unity. 0020 The blast gouged a three and a-half foot crater in the street in front of the mosque, tore apart nearby cars and reduced neighbouring shops to a tangled mass of metal, wood and corpses. 0031 As worshippers filled the mosque and the surrounding streets for funeral services for the victims, a crowd of about four-thousand men beat their chests and called for vengeance. 0042 No Iraqi police or US soldiers were evident. 0045 A senior police official said the bomb at the Imam Ali mosque was made from the same type of materials used in the attacks on the UN headquarters and the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad earlier this month. 0057 The official said four men - two Iraqis and two Saudis - had been arrested in connection with the bombing. 0104 Friday's attack is certain to complicate efforts by the United States to pacify an increasingly violent Iraq. 0111 The leading Shiite cleric who died in the blast, Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, was a moderate who was seen as a stabilising force in Iraq. 0119 He had repeatedly asked the country's Shiite Muslims, who make up about 60 per cent of the population, to be patient with the United States.
