Explore how artists and scientists have used optical devices such as the camera obscura and the camera lucida to create realistic images and learn about how we see. In this episode of Art+Science, we visit the Department of Conservation and Science Photo Conservation at the Art Institute of Chicago, where we meet Jim Iska, an assistant conservator of preparation and photography, who shows us some examples of historical photographs from the museum’s collection, as well as the camera obscura. We also talk to Pablo Garcia, an associate professor in the Department of Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who demonstrates how to use a camera lucida to draw. He also gives us some advice on how to pursue a career in art and science.
