This recording is part of a seven-part professional learning series supporting implementation of British Columbia’s Foundational English Language Arts Learning Progressions. In this session, hosts Calico Clark and Angelo Graffos explore reading comprehension, the ultimate goal of reading and a complex process that depends on multiple interacting skills. Comprehension is both a process and a product, shaped by students’ language knowledge, background knowledge, and their ability to accurately read the words on the page. Together, they examine: What reading comprehension is and how it develops The difference between the process and the product of comprehension The key elements that contribute to strong comprehension Instructional shifts that support deeper understanding of text Practical, classroom-ready strategies to support all learners The session includes research-informed guidance, classroom examples, and opportunities for reflection and discussion to support effective implementation in schools and districts. This series is offered through The Literacy Collaborative, a partnership between Dyslexia Canada and local educators, in support of strong, evidence-aligned literacy instruction across British Columbia.
