In the early days of the Boy Scouts of America, contests to connect impressive Scouts and incredible adventures, such as Paul Siple’s trip to Antarctica with Admiral Byrd, were used to publicize the BSA as well as engage new supporters of the young organization. In 1928, three Eagle Scouts represented the more than 600,000 youth members of the BSA on a five-week adventure that took them across Europe and to East Africa, where they were partnered with world-renowned photographers and moviemakers, Martin and Osa Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on a photography safari in Africa. Following their return and the success of the book the Scouts authored, one of the Scouts, Dick Douglas, was given another opportunity to go on an adventure with George Putnam, this time to hunt Grizzly Bears in Alaska, which resulted in a second book authored by Douglas.
