Archeology can give us a wonderful glimpse back into time through the lens of people's stomachs. Additionally, food can also reveal a glimpse into a person's social status. In this video I break down the important facts and argument of a Master's thesis by Jeffrey Lee Watts-Roy called "The Frontier, Food Remains, and Archeological Meaning".( https://scholarworks.wm.edu/cgi/viewc...) Not everyone on the frontier was a subsistence hunter, and hunting wasn't a luxury afforded to everyone. Life was hard then, and unless your job was to hunt, the odds were that you had other things to do that took precedence. Additionally, it wasn't all about hunting. Sometimes it was also about presenting yourself through your food. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite parts of the entire study, the notion that the examination of the bones left behind by one frontier family lends creedence to the notion that “identity works on any plane and in any situation, for, the same forces that compelled people to move to frontier regions and establish, or signify, identity are indubitably related to the perpetuation of roles, classes, and identities in the contemporary world." (Watts-Roy) Simply put, your notion of your own identity and how you revelaed yourself to the world may have been relative to where you were in life, it was never the less one of the most important parts of it. It defined how you moved about through society helped a unique American culture spread westward. All photos and paintings in the public domain. Original music courtesy Deke Wiggins.
