After a month and a half of strictly traveling through the Ecuadorian Andes, I was faced with my first international border crossing during my 9 month journey south to the tip of the continent. After a bit of research, I decided to book my bus to Jaen, Peru from Loja, Ecuador as soon as I arrived at Loja's bus terminal as I read there weren't many buses that took this route each week. Two days later I was ready to cross into Peru via public transport. The southern most part of the Ecuadorian Andes was a very remote and obviously neglected part of the country, almost like a world of its own. Roads and infrastructure were of poor quality and poverty was widespread. Nonetheless, the colorful villages often nestled within jungle valleys or on the edge of cliffs were wildly captivating. Although just getting a small glimpse into the lives of the people living in this region, this bus journey turned out to be the most rewarding of any I took in the country. Through dense jungle and river valleys, views as far as the eye can see and blinding fog, rain and shine, this border crossing from Ecuador to Peru is a travel experience I will never forget! 🇪🇨 🇵🇪
