This is a redo of a cover I had originally uploaded on December 18, 2016. The reason for this is mostly due to that video's audio being too low compared to all the others, so I tweaked the volume balance in a few places. I also went ahead and increased the tempo a little bit. Other than that, it's pretty much the same. Despite being only the first of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas and one of his very first published works, this is not at all a piece to be looked down on and it holds up quite well even when compared to the more ambitious last sonatas. Beethoven surely follows the model of previous classical composers like Mozart in this work; not a single note is out of place, and the structure is a near perfect example of sonata form (exposition, development, and recapitulation). Even then, from the very beginning and in every detail we are alerted to the natural instinct for drama that would inform the rest of Beethoven's music. At first hearing, It might sound a little tame compared to later pieces of his like the famous Symphony No. 5, but, just as in Mozart at his best, the pathos is definitely there. We just have to listen more carefully and sensitively to perceive it. The exposition is concise and concentrated, really featuring only one theme group, characterized at the beginning by arresting and perfectly timed changes in volume, and yet a somewhat cheerful ending (0:42). After the exposition's repeat (0:50), the just as concise development section (1:40) plays around with various elements from the exposition, showing new dramatic possibilities inherent in the material. The transition towards the recapitulation is delightfully piquant in its dissonances (2:25). Said recapitulation, as a varied and final reprise of the exposition, mostly proceeds as expected at first (2:33), but the latter half (3:07) is darker this time, remaining in the main key of F minor. The previously cheerful ending from the exposition is now stern sounding (3:15), and the movement is promptly given a terse conclusion (3:24). Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 Movement I.
