In the misted hills of Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands, Mungalli Creek Dairy has been quietly going against the grain for three decades. In an era when dairy farms across Australia have dwindled from abundance to rarity, this family-run farm has done something remarkable: it has grown. When the dairy industry was deregulated in 2000, removing price guarantees for farmers, the number of dairies in the region fell from 185 to just 30. Yet brothers Rob and Dan Watson chose a different path—guided by instinct more than convention. Long before deregulation, they began working biodynamically, aligning their herd and land with the natural rhythms of life. For Rob, it began with the soil. Having farmed without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers since the beginning, his discovery of biodynamic practices deepened his connection to the land beneath his feet. As the industry contracted, Mungalli turned challenge into opportunity—crafting their own cheese, yoghurt, and milk, each one a reflection of their landscape’s vitality. By avoiding over-processing and homogenisation, Mungalli preserves the integrity of their milk, allowing its nutrients to be absorbed more easily—a living food that mirrors living soil. Their success has created jobs, supported nearby farming families, and offered a model for how regional food systems can thrive. This is what it looks like to produce good food while caring for the land, the animals, and the people who depend on them. 📹 Shot by Henry Smith instagram.com/hsmithcreative/ 📖 Learn more about Farmer’s Footprint Australia: Instagram: www.instagram.com/farmersfootprintaustralia Website: www.farmersfootprint.org.au 🐄 Explore Mungalli Biodynamic: Instagram: instagram.com/mungallicreek Website: mungallicreekdairy.com.au Subscribe for more stories from the ground up!
