Halkett Island—also known as Deadman’s Island—is a small, rocky islet in Victoria’s upper harbour that was long used by the lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees) people as a sacred burial ground. Once marked on early treaty maps as the “Island of the Dead,” it served as a resting place where the dead were laid in boxes or canoes, often in trees, accompanied by memorial carvings and personal items. In 1867, the site was desecrated when a fire—started by local youths—burned through the graves, prompting rare legal action under the Indian Graves Protection Act. Later stripped from Songhees reserve lands in 1924, it was officially recognized as an archaeological site in 1964 and finally returned to Songhees control in 1993. Despite its colonial renaming as Halkett Island, many still refer to it by its older, more haunting name—Deadman’s Island—remembering its tragic history and deep cultural significance. Paranormal Victoria is a series of videos that explore the locations of alleged hauntings and paranormal activity in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and its surrounding areas. I’m planning to visit these places and discuss their history and the people who have inhabited them. My main focus will be on the paranormal legends and the possibility of ghosts that may be haunting these spaces. I might even bring my EMF reader and try to detect any kind of presence or entity. I’m a total amateur and not a professional ghost hunter, but I’m fascinated by the paranormal.
