Biotechnology has made significant contributions to the field of medicine by providing safer, more effective, and targeted therapies. 1. Genetically Engineered Insulin Insulin was earlier extracted from pancreas of slaughtered animals. Using recombinant DNA technology, human insulin is now produced by genetically modified bacteria (E. coli). The gene for human insulin is introduced into bacteria, which then produce insulin. This insulin is safe, pure, and does not cause allergic reactions. Example: Humulin 2. Gene Therapy Gene therapy is used to correct genetic disorders by introducing a normal gene into the cells. The functional gene replaces the defective gene. It is done using vectors like retroviruses. Example: ADA (Adenosine Deaminase) deficiency Leads to immune system malfunction. Normal ADA gene is introduced into lymphocytes of the patient. 3. Molecular Diagnosis Modern biotechnology allows early and accurate diagnosis of diseases. (a) PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Used to amplify DNA. Helps in early detection of diseases like HIV, cancer, genetic disorders. (b) ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) Detects antigens or antibodies.
