Enjoy this tour of St Thomas' Anglican Church in Lydiate. St Thomas' Church was built in 1841 after a group of local people and landowners raised the funds for its construction. Prior to this, villagers had the arduous four mile walk to attend the nearest church - St Cuthbert's in Halsall. The church was initially recognised as a 'chapel at ease' but was given church status in 1871. In 1912, the church was extended. St Thomas' Church was one of many Victorian churches built in the Gothic Revival style. St Thomas famously wouldn't believe that Jesus had died on the cross and was resurrected, insisting that he be able to see and touch his wounds. Despite this, he was one of Jesus' most loyal disciples and his character denomstrates how deep faith can develop through questioning. St Thomas spread the Christian message as far as India.
