Ruff Woods is a 19 acre area of woodland on the outskirts of Ormskirk. A local benefactor named named Thomas Holcroft purchased the wood in 1912 to stop the land being developed for housing. The wood is now managed by West Lancashire Council: https://www.westlancs.gov.uk/leisure-... In the wood is a mixture of oak, pine and silver birch trees and it provides habitat for grey squirrels, tawny owls, woodpeckers and a variety of songbirds. It also contains a disused 19th century sandstone quarry, which once played an active role in providing the stone used for building in the local area. The name Ruff is probably extracted from either Old English or Norse and means wild and untamed. The local town of Ormskirk means 'Orm's Church'. A Viking invader named Orm probably arrived here and either settled next to a church or built a church.
