In this video I compare two ribbon microphones for recording trumpet and cornet: • MXL R144 Special Edition Ribbon Microphone • Golden Age Audio R2 MKII Ribbon Microphone Both microphones were run through a Behringer Flow 8 mixer and recorded directly to an iPhone using the Blackmagic Camera app. Gain levels were matched as closely as possible and a small amount of reverb was added to simulate a natural performance space. 🎧 For the best listening experience, I recommend using headphones or quality speakers. Phone or tablet speakers will not accurately reproduce the subtle tonal differences between these ribbon microphones. Throughout the video I perform a variety of musical excerpts while alternating between the two microphones so listeners can directly compare tone, articulation, projection, and warmth across multiple styles of brass playing. ⸻ Microphone Placement For reference in the video, the microphones were positioned as follows: MXL R144 — positioned to my right side Golden Age Audio R2 MKII — positioned to my left side From the viewer’s perspective this may appear reversed depending on screen orientation, but this was the physical placement during the recording.
