In 1970, Neil Young told the South who they were. In 1974, Lynyrd Skynyrd answered back with three chords and one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock history. The "feud" that launched a thousand bar bands was never really a feud at all - Van Zant wore a Neil Young t-shirt on stage, and Young later said "Sweet Home Alabama" was a better song than his own "Southern Man." Tonight I'm playing the song that defined Southern rock, as a 77-year-old guitarist who's been playing that D-C-G riff for fifty years. Three chords. That's all it takes when you play them with conviction. 0:00 - The Real Story Behind the Neil Young "Feud" 1:30 - Sweet Home Alabama (1974) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎵 SWEET HOME ALABAMA (1974) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Written by Ronnie Van Zant, Ed King, and Gary Rossington in Jacksonville, Florida as a direct response to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and "Alabama." Recorded at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia with producer Al Kooper. Released on "Second Helping" in 1974, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 - Skynyrd's highest-charting single. The song's meaning is more nuanced than people think. When Van Zant sings "In Birmingham they love the governor," the backing vocals respond "boo, boo, boo." He wasn't endorsing George Wallace. He was saying the South is complicated, and outsiders don't get to define it with a single brush stroke. Van Zant and Neil Young were actually friends and mutual admirers. Van Zant wore a Neil Young t-shirt on stage. After the 1977 plane crash that killed Van Zant, Young was devastated and said he missed him terribly. The "feud" was really two musicians having a conversation through their songs. MUSICAL NOTES: • Key: D major (the iconic D-Cadd9-G riff pattern) • Tempo: ~100 BPM (moderate, confident groove) • Style: Southern rock with country-rock foundation • Signature Elements: The opening D-C-G riff with descending walkdown, sing-along chorus, confident mid-tempo swagger PERFORMANCE NOTES: • The opening riff is everything - D to Cadd9 to G with the walkdown • Use open chord voicings for that full Southern rock ring • Keep the groove steady and confident at ~100 BPM - don't rush it • The triple-guitar parts simplify beautifully to solo acoustic • The chorus is a singalong moment - open up the dynamics If you enjoy Southern rock and classic rock acoustic covers, please subscribe!
