In October 2022, a disgruntled former police officer walked into a nursery school in remote northeastern Thailand and opened fire. Twenty-three children and two teachers were killed, most of them shot point-blank. The massacre left 36 dead in total, the deadliest in Thai history, and one of the worst anywhere in the world. The weapon used was a Sig Sauer P365 pistol, manufactured more than 8,000 miles away in a factory in New Hampshire. It was not an anomaly. Nearly 40 percent of guns recovered at crime scenes outside North America are traced back to legal U.S. sales. Today, Thailand is the single largest importer of American-made semi-automatic weapons in the world, with an estimated ten million guns in circulation, roughly one for every seven people. And as the weapons have flooded in, so have the mass shootings. It is a phenomenon that many Thais blame on American culture as much as the guns themselves. 'There is an overwhelming amount of guns in the black market,' says Colonel Wiwat Jitsopakul of Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau. 'For the past three to four years, we realized that guns have been spreading all over the country, mainly through online platforms and social media.' In this episode of the Big Story podcast, senior correspondent Jason Motlagh travels to rural Nong Bua Lamphu province to meet with families of the children killed in the nursery school massacre, still fighting for justice. In Bangkok, survivors of a recent mall shooting revisit their experience, a frightening portent of what may lie ahead. Their testimonies share a common thread: 'We never thought it would happen here.'
