Laos holds a distinction no country would want. It is the most bombed nation in history. During the Vietnam War, the Nixon administration dropped more than two million tons of ordnance on this tiny Southeast Asian country, more than twelve times the amount dropped on Japan in World War II. That works out to roughly a ton of bombs for every single person living in Laos at the time. Almost a third of them never exploded. And for decades, hidden in fields and forests across the countryside, they have continued to kill and maim, paralyzing communities and economic development long after the war ended. In this episode of the Big Story podcast, we follow an all-women bomb disposal team working to clear the land of these hidden dangers. We meet bomb victims struggling to survive, and the organizations leading rehabilitation and land reclamation efforts. And drawing on rare archival material, activists and security experts unpack the dark story behind America's so-called Secret War, and the lack of accountability that endures to this day. For the people of Laos, the impact of that war is anything but secret. Subscribe to Big Story wherever you get your podcasts, and watch the full-length documentary at cgtnnow.com.
