Dating back to the 17th Century, the area known as the Northern Defences in Gibraltar has been the troglodytic home to the Rock's defenders. Having laid abandoned and neglected for decades, hundreds of tons of rubbish have been removed since 2015, and while not fully open to the public just yet, the tunnels can be respectfully explored. We spent hours in and around the Northern Defences, both above and below ground, and still so much we didn't see. Hopefully from this walkthrough, you can get an idea of the rich history and special features preserved deep underground on the Rock of Gibraltar.
