Last July 15, Rotary Metro Aurora opened the door to healing, strength and independence to the residents of Marillac Hills through Reconnect, a back-to-school project of Rotary Metro Aurora. Marillac Hills is a DSWD shelter for abused women and children who were victims of sexual abuse, trafficking, child cybersex exploitation and there are children in conflict with the law as well. Majority of the residents of Marillac do not have family to rely on because majority of the perpetrators in their cases are family members. One of the social workers told us that there are girls who are afraid to go out of Marillac because they do not know what their life would be like outside. “We have this girl who trembles every time she goes near the gate,” the social worker relates in the vernacular. These girls need the confidence and the skill to be able to stand on their own. This is where Rotary Metro Aurora comes in. Rotary Metro Aurora believes that the key to making a difference in the lives of people is through projects that have a lifetime impact. Thus instead of giving a person fish, one has to be taught how to fish. In partnership with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority or TESDA, 30 girls were given food processing training and 25 were given housekeeping training. The energy and the excitement of the girls, the social workers and even the teachers and volunteers was exhilarating. This was the first time such program was brought to Marillac. The girls were so eager to learn they did not want to take a break. “What I learned today is very important because I can use it in the future when I go out of the shelter. Now, I know I can have a better future and a good job,” shares 18-year-old Jam, a student of the housekeeping training. Simultaneously, writing workshops were also given to 30 girls by established writers from #romanceclass, #heistclub, GMA, Channel News Asia, Creative Tree and a professor from Veritas Catholic School. The students who came in strangers to writing came out friends with the written word. “We need to write because there are things we can’t share with others,” says one. Her companion on the other hand came out with an essay appreciating a fidget spinner. “I realized that our life is like a fidget spinner. It will not move if no one will make it move. It will stop if you make it stop. It’s similar to God. He will not give us a problem we cannot handle. We just need to obey him. He will never leave us.” 20 residents were also treated to face painting and taught how to make bracelets by Little Shop of Fun. To ensure the growth of the girks, workshops and training for the girls will continuously be conducted from this day on. When asked if they were confident if they can fulfill their dreams, the girls answered in a gleeful chorus of “Yes!” They will be diligent in their studies, they said. Another girl said that everything is possible to someone who wants to achieve her heart’s desire. In addition to trainings, 520 notebooks, 660 assorted pad papers, 400 pencils, 350 ballpens, 800 pieces of napkins, assorted books, toys, snacks were donated by Johnson & Johnson and private individuals. Rhea Santos, host of Unang Hirit and Tunay na Buhay of GMA also dropped by and supported the outreach. Because of Rotary Metro Aurora’s Reconnect, the future of the girls in Marillac are brighter now. Because we are people of action, the victims will come out victors in their life.
