The Oral Health Working Group (OHWG) of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) did a webinar during Global Public Health Week 2025 focused on decolonization in global oral health. It brought together thought leaders to examine colonial influences on oral health systems and propose actionable pathways toward more equitable approaches. Global oral health reflects colonial power structures prioritizing Western knowledge systems and approaches over indigenous and local frameworks. This has resulted in: 🔹 Persistent oral health inequities across global populations 🔹 Misalignment between dominant oral health practices and local cultural contexts 🔹 Undervaluation of traditional knowledge and healing practices 🔹 Unsustainable dependency relationships in global oral health programming 🔹 Power imbalances in oral health research, education, and policy development 🔹 Decolonizing oral health requires critical examination of these structures and conscious efforts to transform approaches. This webinar responds to growing recognition that achieving oral health equity requires addressing these foundational issues of power, representation, and knowledge validation in global oral health. Thank you to our speakers Dr. Renzo Guinto, Professor Morenike Oluwatoyin Ukpong and Dr. Cleopatra Matanhire-Zihanzu And, of course, to our OHWG, which includes Abiola Adeniyi, Hyewon Lee and other members!
