Arizona is home to many interesting wildlife species, including the often-misunderstood collared peccary or javelina. We will learn about this fascinating social species’ life habits, ecology, distribution & behavior. About the presenter: Mariana Altrichter is a native of Argentina, lived in Costa Rica for over five years, and in Prescott since 2011. She received her Master of Science in Wildlife Conservation from the National University of Costa Rica and her Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Arizona. Mariana has been doing biological and sociological research for the last 30 years on the conservation of biodiversity, the use of wildlife by rural and indigenous people, and the interactions between macroeconomics and local people's livelihoods. She has published over 60 scientific papers, books, and book chapters. She also works in environmental education, seeing it as an important approach to cultivating early environmental literacy and conservation-minded adults. Mariana is a member of the IUCN Peccary Specialist Group and has been doing research on peccaries in Central and South America since 1997. She is now focusing on research and conservation of the endangered and endemic Chacoan peccary in northern Argentina. Mariana has two wonderful teenage daughters, Ceiba and Suli.
