When we asked you to share—in just six words—why organizations like the Highlands Center matter to you and our community, we received beautiful responses: “Humanity’s survival depends upon healthy nature.” – HCNH Founder “Dirty feet in a sanitized world.” – HCNH Executive Director “A plant is so beautiful, but look at its neighbors…we’re all part of something bigger.” – Donna P., this year’s matching donor All of these share a common theme: our deep connection to the natural world is essential to our survival and well-being—both personally and collectively. I have a t-shirt from when I was a new mom with a picture of the Earth and the words: “Respect Your Mother.” Being a mom is the most challenging and rewarding role of my life. It’s also one part of my identity that I’ve sometimes felt insecure about—balancing my role as a full-time leader of a local nonprofit with being a full-time mother of two beautiful daughters. From day one, though, I’ve seen these roles as intertwined: both are a full investment in the multi-generational future of the world. Our founding mothers and fathers shared a similar vision when they wrote the second part of our mission, to help people “become wise caretakers of the land.” Today, more than ever, Mother Earth needs our help. Whether your personal land ethic is hands-off, hands-on, or somewhere in between, we can all agree that without respect and care for nature, our negative impact will outweigh the positive. A gift in these final days allows us to do small but mighty acts of kindness for the Central Highlands ecoregion this year. Be part of respecting our Mother Nature.
