In 2010, the South African authorities arrested Henry Okah, a Nigerian oil region activist widely believed to be the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation if the Niger Delta (MEND). It was in connection with car bombings in which several people died in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and the southern oil town of Warri. The courts went ahead to convict Okah in 2013 and he was ultimately sentenced to a 24-year jail term in South Africa. More than 15 years later, Okah insists he is innocent and is a victim of a miscarriage of justice engineered by international oil interests in collaboration with Nigerian and South African authorities. He points to violations of South African law in the process of his arrest and trial and wants the South African Constitutional Court review the unlawful aspects of his trial and conviction. What are the implications of such a review? Why did South Africa get involved in the Niger Delta conflict on the side of the Nigerian government and international companies and against the interests of the people of the Niger Delta, whose habitat has been turned into the mist polluted place on earth? This three-part video series attempts to provide answers. NB: Various ethnic Ijaw activist groups recently launched a signature campaign calling for Okah’s release.
