ATC confirmed our request but did not approve it due to traffic. So we had been vectored for an ILS (instrument landing system) approach. The airport is located near the town of Spata. Driving distance to the city of Athens is about 30 km or 19 miles. The airport is also known as Eleftherios Venizelos airport. The airport opened in March of 2001. It replaced the smaller Ellinikon International Airport. This airport was near the city but had no room for further expansion.
