Florida Man Attempts Escape After Routine Police Stop

When officers approached the car and made contact with the driver, 22-year-old Jonathan Rivas, they reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, which raised their suspicions and prompted further investigation. Officers asked Rivas to step out of the car while they checked the vehicle. During this time, he appeared visibly upset and anxious, at one point telling officers he was experiencing a panic attack. Although he briefly calmed down, Rivas largely refused to answer questions and remained silent for an extended period. As officers continued their investigation, the situation abruptly escalated when Rivas shoved an officer, jumped back into his car, speeding away through nearby streets. Investigators say the attempted escape ended minutes later after Rivas lost control of the vehicle and struck multiple cars, forcing him to abandon the Honda and run on foot. Officers caught up to him a short distance away and took him into custody following a brief struggle. Rivas was later transported for medical evaluation before being booked into jail.
