“Can Anyone Explain?” was written by Bennie Benjamin and George David Weiss. The jazz rendition was recorded by tenor sax legend Coleman Hawkins. Most likely this version was recorded in around 1950. If this were so, the lineup would have been: • Billy Taylor on piano • John Collins on guitar • Percy Heath on bass • Art Blakey on drums Hawkins is remembered for his iconic 1939 take on “Body and Soul.” His rendition on “Can Anyone Explain?” suggests that his style isn’t stuck in one jazz style but evolving. Why Hawkins is a legend? Coleman Randolph Hawkins (November 21, 1904 – May 19, 1969), nicknamed "Hawk" and sometimes "Bean". Fellow saxophonist Lester Young, known as "Pres", commented in a 1959 interview with The Jazz Review: "As far as I'm concerned, I think Coleman Hawkins was the President first, right? As far as myself, I think I'm the second one." Miles Davis once said: "When I heard Hawk, I learned to play ballads." I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos. This channel does not use recordings from CDs. As much as possible, I attempted to remove most of the pops and crackles from the original vinyl album. Some remastering was applied to make the performance cut through within the confines of the loudness wars. Hope you enjoy. INXDS. #bebop #jazzsax #vinylrecord
